Portable vs rooftop solar

Both turn sunlight into electricity, but they solve different problems. Here’s how to tell which one fits.

Portable solar: a power station plus folding panels

  • What it powers: the devices you plug into the station, such as a fridge, CPAP, lights, phones, laptops or tools. Larger systems can feed selected home circuits through a transfer switch or panel kit.
  • Scale: panels from tens of watts to a few hundred watts each; the station limits total solar input (often a few hundred to around 1,000W on the units we cover, more on home-backup systems).
  • Setup: unfold, aim at the sun, plug in. No permits, no roof work, and it goes with you camping or to the RV.
  • Cost: the kits on our solar page run from a few hundred dollars to around a thousand.
  • Limits: you set it out and pack it away, and it won’t meaningfully cut a whole home’s electric bill.

Rooftop solar: a permanent system on your house

  • What it powers: your home through the main panel, usually tied to the utility grid.
  • Scale: typically several kilowatts of panels, sized to offset a large share of household use.
  • Setup: designed and installed by a licensed contractor, with permits and utility approval.
  • Outages: many grid-tied systems shut off during a grid outage for safety unless they include a battery or backup equipment designed for it. Ask about this specifically if backup is your goal.
  • Cost and incentives: a major home investment; federal, state and utility incentives change over time, so check current rules where you live.

Which one fits?

Choose portable if you want outage backup for essentials, power at camp or in the RV, you rent, or you don’t want roof work. Look at rooftop if you own your home and want to offset most of your electric bill long-term; add battery backup if you also want power during outages.

Plenty of people do both: rooftop for everyday savings, and a portable station for emergencies and travel.
